Well, as it stands right now, I’m all go for my new hobby …. Civil War Re-enactment! I attended the Cedar Creek Battle Re-enactment this past Saturday and met up with the unit that I’m going to be joining. The 49th Virginia is family friendly unit, full of some very nice and welcoming people. Georgia, one of the groups founders, is such a great lady, full of so much information. I talked to her and a few of the other ladies before heading down to Sutler’s Row to find a hoop and a corset. As I was walking away, I over heard them say that I’d fit in great! Ah … it’s always nice to be liked!
So, I purchased my corset and my flounced hoop skirt this weekend, along with a few patterns for dresses. I’m going to be a busy sewing bee this November! There is a small day event that the 49th does, which involves laying wreathes at Arlington Cemetary and then their Christmas party. So, I need to get some sewing done! I’ve got to make my pantaloons, chemise, under petite coat, corset cover, dress, and cloak in a month and a half. Now, I’m not that good at sewing, but my Mom is going to help me, for which I am so amazingly grateful. Now I just need to figure out how I can afford to get a bonnet and shoes by then as well. (The shoes I have to buy … might be able to borrow the bonnet.)
Speaking of money …. argh – I can’t believe how expensive it is to get started in this. As it stands right now, it’s going to cost me close to $500 to get two dresses, two bonnets ( the ladies in the group do Victorian Mourning one day and regular re-enactment the next), shoes, and all the proper extras that I’m going to need just to be period in my dress. As for camping …. we’re looking at close to $700. Yeah … yikes. And John is going back to school this spring, along with paying off the credit card. So, I’m really not sure how I’m going to get all this ready by May 1st. I may have to pick up a couple extra 8 hour shifts at work here and there. I am working both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so that time and a half will be a good thing. Oh yeah …. Christmas. Gotta get people things for Christmas! *sigh* I really had to pick this as my new hobby, didn’t I? LOL
